Based on a number of professionally translated sources, I have compiled the following English-to-Inuktitut list of common English names. Inuktitut has many dialects and variations; these are not necessarily the only way to translate each name into Inuktitut, but they’re all certainly valid.

Don’t see your name on the list? Leave a comment requesting a translation, or you could try to translate it yourself. I would suggest following these steps:
  1. Find a way to write your name using only the vowels A, I, and U (no E or O). Combine these if necessary (e.g., Ryan becomes Raian; John becomes Jaan).
  2. Do away with unnecessary consonants. Nick becomes Nik, Thomas becomes Taamas, Johnny becomes Jaani.
  3. If your name ends with an ‘-s’ sound, it could end with ‘-si’ in Inuktitut. Moses becomes Muusisi, Alice becomes Alisi.
  4. The letter R is sometimes (but not always) replaced by U, or otherwise omitted. Peter becomes Pita, Mark becomes Mak, Henry becomes Hinuli, Oliver becomes Aalivu. Any D will become a T.
  5. Most consonants are available for you to use, but you should confine yourself to the ones on this list. Inuktitut is made up of consonant-vowel groups (big symbols) and final consonants (superscript symbols), and together this writing system is called “syllabics.”
  6. See here for some additional tips. Or simply look through the list below to find how each syllable in your name could be translated.

  • Allison says:

Thanks! This was very helpful. I’m currently teaching up north and figuring out all the names can be a challenge. Most people switch between using the English version or the Inuktitut one so it can be hard to keep it straight. From what I’ve encountered so far this list seems pretty accurate.

  • Claire says:

Is Claire possible? I’m from there but I’m adopted..

  • Kyle says:

I’ve added it. There seem to be several different ways to render Claire/Clare in Inuktitut. Pick your favourite!

  • Barbara says:

good morning could you very kindly write me back on how to write in inuktitut these two names:

    Greta is: “Sapanngarissoq”
    Layla is: “Unnuaq”

With my sincere thanks for your so nice attention, all the very best barbara from switzerland

  • Kyle says:

    Hi Barbara,

Where did you find these translations? I ask because “unnuaq” is the Inuktitut word for “night.” On this page, I’m listing phonetic transcriptions of English names into Inuktitut, not translations like you have provided.

That said, I have added “Greta” and “Layla” to my list.

As far as writing those two words in Inuktitut syllabics, it would be something like ᓴᐸᖖᒐᕆᔅᓴᒃ (Sapanngarissoq) and ᐅᓐᓄᐊᒃ (Unnuaq).

hi just wondering if you can show me what BREATHE is in Inuktitut syllabics

  • Kyle says:

Sorry, I can’t help. I suggest you consult an English-Inuktitut dictionary. This page is for name transcriptions, not word translations.

  • Carson says:

Hi, I am in the middle of a final assessment for my geography course and am wanting to implement my name into the text to show my understanding of the Inuktitut and if you could help, that would be greatly appreciated.

  • Kyle says:

    Hi Carson,

Why not try to see if you can put it together on your own? Both syllables in your name (“car” and “son”) appear multiple times in the list of names I have already translated. You should be able to piece it together.

  • Melodie says:

Can you translate melodie please? Tried to figure it out but not sure? Meluuti?

  • Kyle says:

Hi Melodie – I’ve added it! Great job trying to translate it yourself, and I’m sure your version would work, too. The translation I added (“Milati”) is from a professionally translated source, FYI.

  • Chantal says:

Hi Kyle! Wow! What an amazing thing you are doing by providing these translations!

Our Division 1 students are studying Iqaluit and going on a ‘field trip’ there next week. One of the learning opportunities we wanted them to try was writing their name in Inuktituk. The challenge is that there are approx. 100 students and all at grade 1 or 2 level.

I am really hoping that I could ask for a huge favour! What are the chances that you would be able/willing to translate the names for me? I’ve found the ones on the list that you have provided, however, we have some students that have very unique, multi-cultural names and would take me hours to translate…. Let me know the possibility please….

    Sincerely,
    Chantal Petersen
