KHM_3898I am a Halifax-based urban planner, EIT, data analyst, web designer, photographer, and musician. This page contains examples of my work and links to some of the projects to which I have contributed.

  • Urban planning: In Toronto, I was an urban planner at Urban Strategies and a 2015 graduate of the Master of Science in Planning program at the University of Toronto. During my degree, I focused on waterfronts, transportation networks, environmental planning, and good urban design. At Urban Strategies, I have contributed to brownfield master plans, waterfront revitalization projects, transportation planning, and expanding the firm’s data and GIS capabilities.

  • Engineering: I have worked on the Solar Ship (left), an experimental, buoyantly assisted aircraft that aims to revolutionize electric flight. During my tenure, I was responsible for CAD design, stress analysis, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and the on-board flight data capture system. My designs for control surfaces, aerodynamic fairings, and a weights/balance tool specific to the aircraft were critical to the attainment of flight. I served as flight test engineer and obtained my ROC-A radio license.

I have also worked previously in turbine manufacturing (Pratt & Whitney Canada) and piston engine maintenance and overhaul (Aerotec Engines Ltd.).

  • Data analysis: To assist with environmental compliance, I have analyzed and manipulated enormous datasets (1,000,000+ rows) from UK-based retailers such as Harrods, Selfridges, Toni & Guy, Waitrose, and John Lewis, and my work has been audited and praised by the UK Environment Agency.

I am fluent in Microsoft Excel and its more advanced functions (e.g., VBA) and have also used SPSS, Maple, MATLAB, and Minitab for statistical analysis.

  • Foreign languages: Thanks to the time I have spent in Europe, I have a good comprehension of written and spoken French and Italian.

  • Communications: I served as photo editor and staff writer for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute student newspaper, The Towers, from 2006 to 2009. I write clearly and concisely and can communicate important ideas through words, graphics, and photographs.

  • Music: I am a jazz pianist who has performed in Canada, the United States, and Europe. My current gig is with Toronto’s Hart House Jazz Ensemble. Before that, I performed with the Donut Kings, a professional big band comprising mainly members of the Oxford University community.

I build and maintain websites. Here are some I have worked on…

Correspondingly, I have a variety of useful IT skills, including HTML/CSS, content management systems, web design, mySQL, Adobe Photoshop, and web server administration.

Education & academic documents

I completed a SSHRC-funded graduate degree in Urban Planning from the University of Toronto. I have received several other scholarships and honours, including top student awards from the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners.

I also have a degree in Aerospace Engineering (Bachelor of Science, High Distinction, WPI, 2009), with a minor in Music. In 2007, I completed a project to preserve and restore public art in the city of Venice, Italy (see below). I was inducted into the American national engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi, in 2008. For my senior engineering project, I designed shape-transforming parachutes for the U.S. Army (see below), who provided a UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter for our final tests.

Here are some documents I completed (mainly in student groups) during my undergraduate degree…

Life projects

I have done some interesting things, including…

  • Walking 1,000 miles of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela through France and Spain.

  • Moving to Europe for two years and settling in the beautiful medieval town of Oxford, England.

  • Learning the Venetian style of rowing (like a gondolier, standing up) while I lived in Venice.

  • Working as a historical animator, drumming for the Victorian-era 78th Highlanders, for seven summers at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site.
