The start of week 8, with 367.5 kilometers walked so far in Spain. In my journal today, I reckoned we would arrive in Santiago on June 12. We probably would have, if it wasn’t for certain unforeseen circumstances.

At one point yesterday, I felt a very peculiar sensation, as if I was being pulled along the Camino. I just let myself go, as if walking was the easiest thing in the world. We later met a funny Norwegian pilgrim, filming his Camino with a camcorder. He had a few interesting thoughts in line with Ori’s stern instructions to cheer up:
  • It’s not important to actually reach Santiago (although I’m sure a medieval pilgrim would disagree).
  • It is important to be relaxed and to enjoy the journey itself.
  • If you’re not enjoying the journey, you should rest so that you can.
His advice came at an appropriate time for me. I think I will be able to enjoy the last two weeks, and I realize that no good will come from getting upset over everything and everyone.

Below: Our rest day started well – we had coffee with friends, including Manu who was passing through town and who eventually decided to take a rest day in Carrión as well. Another fellow, Manuel, told us lots of interesting stories, including the Arabic origins of the Spanish word for “I hope so,” ojalá.

Below: At breakfast in Carrión de los Condes. To pass the time on the meseta, we sang the name of this town to the tune of “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas.

Unfortunately, I came down with a cold and spent most of the day in bed with a sore throat. We still enjoyed our day off, though; we finally had time to think, relax, stretch out, watch some crazy Spanish TV, read, write, and have a picnic.

The late mornings and afternoons until about 6pm are now almost unbearably hot. I really can’t wait to be out of the flat, shadeless meseta and climbing the lush, green hills of Galicia, which I’ve read is more like England than anything.
